Why no cheers for the A’s?

March 27, 2008

I am a fan of the red sox and a fan of the A’s.  How can this be? Well, the family tree and my hometown resulted in an awkward mix of baseball favorites.

I was less than enthused when the A’s announced that they would be burning their host games with Boston in Japan this year, because that is typically my only chance to see the sox play.  Nevertheless, I have been watching the games and have been sympathizing with the A’s even though they won today.

It seems as though Japan has become a colony of red sox nation.  When Boston left their overflowing press conference, reporters didn’t stick around to question the A’s.

Why no love for Oakland?

Oakland simply does not have the high profile Japanese players like the Sox.   While the A’s may have had a great time visiting Japan, the crowd was far from welcoming.

My question to the MLB is why didn’t the sox play the Mariners in Japan?  The crowd would have been split and the Japanese media would have been more receptive.  Japan loves baseball, but they like cheering for players that they can relate to.  Just like any other fan base, they cheer for their home team, and Boston fit the profile better than the Athletics did.
